How to Make AI Writing Sound Human
Not prompting tips. Not “just edit it afterwards.” The actual editorial architecture that transforms AI prose from competent-but-dead to something a reader would finish without knowing a machine was involved.
The chapter is done. Plot works. Dialogue hits the right beats. Structure follows the outline. You read it back and your attention slides off the page somewhere around paragraph four.
Nothing is wrong. That is the problem. The prose is so consistently adequate that it never surprises, never stumbles, never does anything a reader would remember an hour later. It reads like someone filled in a template labelled “competent fiction.”
The standard advice is to prompt better. Write longer instructions. Add more detail to your system message. This works about as well as telling a tone-deaf singer to “just feel the music more.” The issue is structural, not instructional.
The real reason AI prose falls flat
Language models predict the next word based on statistical probability. Train one on billions of documents and the output converges on the average of everything ever written. Not the best. Not the worst. The median.
Three things break when prose targets the median:
Emotions get named instead of earned. The model writes “anger surged through her” because that construction appears in thousands of training documents. A human writer would show you the anger without naming it. The jaw tightening. The keys pressed too hard. The reply typed and deleted three times before sending something worse.
Sentences march at the same pace. Twelve words. Fourteen words. Eleven words. Thirteen words. The rhythm flatlines. Human prose shifts gears. Short when the pulse spikes. Sprawling when a character drifts. Fragments when something cracks. AI stays in cruise control.
Characters think in straight lines. Situation, reaction, decision, action. Clean and logical. But nobody actually thinks that way. You plan an escape route and your brain reminds you the bathroom light is on. Your hands shake before you understand why. You hug someone and simultaneously imagine pushing them down the stairs. That mess is what makes a character feel alive. AI tidies it up because tidy is more predictable.
Three layers that fix it
Making AI writing sound human requires solving three separate problems. Most approaches try to solve all of them with one prompt. That does not work. Each problem needs its own layer.
Layer 1: Constraint rules
Ban the specific patterns that readers recognise as artificial. Not vaguely. Specifically.
These rules must fire during generation, not afterwards. Post-processing catches symptoms. Constraints prevent the disease. Ghostproof runs 265+ of these. The model never produces the problematic patterns because it was never allowed to.
Layer 2: Voice matching
Strip the AI fingerprints and the prose is clean. It is also anonymous. Correct sentences that could belong to anyone.

Layer 3: Life Injection
The layer most people miss. Clean prose with a matched voice can still produce characters who feel like plot delivery systems. The missing ingredient is cognitive mess.
Neuroscientists call it Default Mode Network activity. The background noise your brain generates when you are supposed to be concentrating. Stray memories. Irrelevant observations. Physical sensations that arrive before conscious thought. The mental weather that makes a person feel like a person on the page.
